LED’s provide a mechanism for Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or “Photo Bio-stimulation” – also called ‘Phototherapy’. The effects of Phototherapy and LLLT are photochemical. When the correct intensity and frequency are used, the light energy photons, generated by the LED light sources, are absorbed by select chromophores in the tissue. This process stimulates mitochondrial activity and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) production; promotes blood circulation and tissue oxygenation, leading to pain relief and cell proliferation, and facilitating the creation and extension of the anti-aging enzymes. The wavelength of light is defined as "the distance between the two successive crests or troughs of the light wave". Therefore, the distance between one crest or trough of one wave and the next wave is known as the wavelength. Because LLLT works by delivering wavelengths of light into our skin where it is absorbed by our cells, its effectiveness is closely connected with the amount of light reaching the target tissue. Wavelengths are often referred to using their associated color and typically include purple/blue (400-495 nm), green (495-570 nm), yellow (570-590 nm), orange (590-620 nm), red (620-750 nm), and near-infrared (750-1200 nm) lights. All tissue targets have an optimum wavelength at which they absorb light. Different tissue targets trigger different biological processes.

Optical power density can be understood as the energy that light can transmit per unit area, in units of W/m² or mW/cm². Human cells respond to light with a biphasic effect, which means that neither too low nor too high energies can achieve the results we expect. A higher irradiance often means a shorter treatment time, but a higher irradiance isn’t always better. If the irradiance is too high, the photon energy will be transformed into excessive heat in the target tissue; the mask may become hot and can inhibit the treatment or even create undesired outcomes.
